Understanding FPV Drone Motors
Choosing the right motor can make or break your FPV build. The motor determines your drone's speed, efficiency, flight time, and handling characteristics. In this guide, we break down every factor you need to consider — from stator size to KV rating.
Motor Size: What the Numbers Mean
FPV motor sizes follow the format XXYY, where XX is the stator width and YY is the stator height in millimeters. For example, a 2207 motor has a 22mm wide stator and 7mm tall stator.
| Motor Size | Best For | Typical Prop | Frame Size |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1103-1106 | Tiny Whoops, indoor | 40mm-65mm | 65mm-85mm |
| 1303-1404 | Micro quads, toothpicks | 3-inch | 2.5-3 inch |
| 1505-1806 | Cinewhoops, light 4-inch | 3-4 inch | 3-4 inch |
| 2004-2203.5 | Lightweight 5-inch | 5-inch | 4-5 inch |
| 2207-2306 | Freestyle, racing | 5-inch | 5 inch |
| 2408-2507 | Heavy freestyle, LR | 5-6 inch | 5-7 inch |
| 2806.5-2810 | 7-inch long range | 7-8 inch | 7+ inch |
KV Rating Explained
KV is the RPM per volt applied with no load. Higher KV = higher RPM, but also higher current draw and less efficiency.
- Low KV (1500-2200) — Long range, 7-inch builds, heavy payloads. Efficient cruising, lower current draw.
- Medium KV (2300-2700) — Versatile all-rounder. Good for 5-inch freestyle and light racing.
- High KV (2800-3600) — Racing and high-speed builds. Maximum power, shorter flight times.
Battery Voltage & KV Matching
| Cell Count | Voltage | Recommended KV Range |
|---|---|---|
| 4S | 14.8V | 2400-2750KV (5-inch) |
| 6S | 22.2V | 1700-1950KV (5-inch) |
| 6S Long Range | 22.2V | 1300-1600KV (7-inch) |
Stator Volume: The Real Power Metric
Stator volume (width² × height) is the best predictor of motor torque. A 2207 (3388mm³) produces significantly more torque than a 2204 (1936mm³) at the same KV. When comparing motors, always check the stator volume alongside the KV.
Top Motor Recommendations by Build Type

Motor Maintenance Tips
- Check motor screws for tightness before every session
- Clean motor bells after crashes — dirt and grass cause imbalance
- Replace bearings when you hear grinding or clicking
- Use thread locker (blue Loctite) on motor screws
- Inspect motor wires for cuts after prop strikes
