Every component mounts to the frame — a bad frame means a bad flying experience. The right frame determines your drone's durability, flight characteristics, and repairability. Here's how to choose.
Frame Geometry
True-X
All four arms are equal length with motors forming a perfect square. Best for: Racing. Equal thrust distribution, most responsive handling. Examples: ImpulseRC Apex, TBS Source One.
Deadcat / Stretched-X
Front arms are wider than rear. Best for: Freestyle and cinematic. Props stay out of HD camera view. Slightly less agile than true-X. Examples: GEPRC Mark5, iFlight Titan XL5.
Squashed-X
Motors form a wider-than-tall rectangle. Best for: Long range, 7-inch builds. Stable cruise, efficient flight. Examples: GEPRC GEP-Pulsar LR, Flywoo Explorer LR.

Arm Thickness: The Durability Factor
- 3-4mm — Ultralight racing. Replaceable, cheap, fragile.
- 5mm — Standard freestyle. Good balance of weight and durability.
- 6mm+ — Heavy-duty and long range. Survives most crashes.
Tip: Look for frames with replaceable arms. A $10 replacement arm beats a $40 bottom plate every day.
Carbon Fiber Quality
Not all carbon is equal. Look for:
- T700 or T800 grade — Industry standard for FPV frames
- 3K twill weave — Strong, good-looking finish
- Chamfered edges — Prevents delamination and cuts
- Press-nut / threaded inserts — Thread into carbon directly wears out
